Interior design is a dynamic field, where every day unfolds with new creative possibilities and unique challenges. Our designers embrace this ever-changing landscape, knowing that no two days are going to be the same.

Still, as an interior designer, there are a few common responsibilities and challenges you may run into. Keep reading for a glimpse into a day in the life of a Knoxville interior designer and what makes this career at George Armour Ewart, Architect so rewarding.

Blending Creativity with the Client’s Vision

Christina Fehr Brooks has been an Interior Designer for eight years. She believes the interior design world brings fresh inspiration, diverse projects, and satisfying end results to those who venture into it.

Here’s what she had to say about her daily life at Knoxville design and architecture firm, GAEA:

Expect Versatility in Projects

“One of the beauties of working at GAEA is our diverse range of projects. Our team tackles everything from boutique restaurants to medical practice redesigns. This variety keeps us on our toes and allows us to approach each project as a unique opportunity to craft distinct and aesthetically captivating spaces.”

Office Life vs. Being on Job Sites

“The daily routine for an interior designer at GAEA is far from monotonous… Some days are spent in the office, selecting finishes and coordinating with our engineering and design teams. Others take us to job sites, where we meet with clients and construction teams to manage schedules, budgets, and address any arising questions. It’s a good mix.”

Learning & Growing as Part of a Team

“In this profession, it can be challenging to manage a growing workload. Our team has been fortunate enough to stay busy and expand, even after the pandemic. And while that’s fantastic, between client communications, design work, and being on-site when needed, there’s a definite need for delegation.

Delegating certain tasks to our architectural associates and interior design interns has been a crucial lesson for me. It’s helped enhance my own work-life balance and theirs by offering some of the newer team members hands-on learning experiences.”

Every Day Starts & Ends with People

“What makes this career truly rewarding is the human aspect. Our team understands interior design and architecture are all about people. Understanding our clients’ and their needs on a personal level is the foundation of our work.

Ultimately, the success of a project lies in knowing that our clients aren’t just satisfied with the final result, but also valued and enjoyed the entire design journey.

My advice for aspiring interior designers is to expect to work in collaborative settings and don’t be afraid to bring fresh ideas to the table, even when a plan for a design changes. Designs improve when they’re fostered in a balanced, creative environment, so make sure to find a firm and team you enjoy working with. After all, we spend most of our time with colleagues in a 40-hour work week!”

Making Time for Life Outside of Work

Despite her love of well-designed physical structures, Christina and her husband Michael enjoy getting outside as much as possible in their free time. They frequent local coffee shops and explore places like scenic trails and farmers markets. Regardless of the day ahead, it always starts with coffee and involves the outdoors in some way for this designer and her family.
