A thriving architectural firm includes many roles carried out by team members at all career levels, each with their own specialized training, licensure, and certification.

George Armour Ewart, Architect is a firm that prides itself on bringing young, talented professionals on board early in their careers. We believe mentorship is an important part of the architectural profession and that it’s crucial to nurture the next generation of creatives who will carry architecture into the future.

Award-Winning Talent

Gisele El-Baaklini is an example of the amazing talent that we’re honored to have as part of our team. Gisele began her pursuit of a career in architecture overseas. After gaining extensive experience in the field in both Lebanon and France, she came to the U.S. in 2017 to begin her graduate degree at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

As a student at the College of Architecture + Design, she trained with some of the top architectural instructors in the nation. She excelled as a student and was even awarded the Robert B. Church Award for her project entitled “Beirut: At the Edge of Land and Sea.”

A Typical Day for an Architectural Associate

Today, Gisele begins her day as many of us do—by making herself a warm morning beverage (for her, it’s herbal tea or hot chocolate) and checking emails. Then, she begins her daily task list, beginning with urgent action items and other things that need her attention within the projects she’s been assigned.

As an architectural associate, Gisele works closely with senior architects and designers to brainstorm, sketch, and develop design concepts. She also engages in regular coordination meetings with clients, contractors, and various stakeholders to assist in managing project timelines, budgets, and resources.

One of Gisele’s primary responsibilities as part of the project team is ensuring that construction progresses smoothly and meets established goals.

Gisele is currently focused on multiple commercial projects, including ClearDefense Pest Control, Pinnacle Motorsports, and a new Family Life Center for Holy Ghost Catholic Church. As part of the project team for each of these jobs, she helps ensure that projects are being completed efficiently and goals are being achieved for our clients. .

Continuous Learning

Staying up-to-date with the latest industry trends, technological advancements, and sustainable practices is essential for architectural associates. One of the things Gisele enjoys about her work with GAEA is our approach to continuous learning and that we view mistakes as learning opportunities rather than failures.

Her love of learning and the opportunity to apply what she learns in the real world is what drew Gisle to architecture… “I enjoy the practical application of theoretical studies,” she says, “namely the consideration of place and social practices in the sphere of design.”

A Community Profession

Architectural associates are integral members of architectural teams, contributing their expertise and creativity to bring design visions to life. And, best of all, they get to see the fruits of their labors in the places they call home.

From design collaboration and research to project coordination and construction oversight, an architectural associate’s day-to-day responsibilities are multifaceted and rewarding. And, by executing these tasks with precision and dedication, architectural associates help shape the built environment around them, leaving a lasting impact on the communities they serve.

In Gisele’s case, she moved to Knoxville to complete her studies, but she stays here because she’s come to enjoy the area for many reasons, including the abundance of parks and dog-welcoming venues. “I have a dog named Max and appreciate that Knoxville is a relatively pet-friendly city compared to other places,” she says.
